“I only know how to approach a place by walking. For what does a street photographer do but walk and watch and wait and talk, and then watch and wait some more, trying to remain confident that the unexpected, the unknown, or the secret heat of the known awaits just around the corner.” Alex Webb, Magnum Photographer.
Street photography is one of my favourite photography genres having been inspired by the early street photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and his book, "The decisive moment." To me, it's capturing a moment in time, a little piece of history than can never be repeated.
The street is the place where I can just wander, go for a coffee and capture the scene around me as my day unfolds. All I need is my camera and I'm at peace with the world.
I usually convert my street images to black and white as they have more impact.
“When you photograph people in colour, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls!” Ted Grant, Canadian Photojournalist.
My "weapon of choice" for street photography is a small mirrorless camera with a fixed lens so I can remain inconspicuous. I will have a small zoom lens in my bag if I want to get closer to the action without getting close.
Two of my favourite locations for Street Photography are Chester and Liverpool and are featured in the gallery below.
